How To Pick The Right Pet GPS System

by Adam Webster

The benefits of having a pet GPS is that it will eliminate the apprehension that you have over allowing your pet to wander your yard freely. You will also feel secure in knowing that your pet can no longer run into the road without your knowing about it immediately.

These systems are an ingenious piece of technology that was created for any pet owner who does not have time to watch their pets every moment of the day, yet still wants to be ensured of their safety.

Using the system

These systems work by having a collar around your pet’s neck that has a special microchip inside. This chip is linked to a satellite tracking system that enables you to monitor your pet at all times. You will be able to set a safe zone within the monitoring system that will allow your pet to go within a certain perimeter around your home.

You will be able to set the distance around your home that the pet is allowed to wander, once out of that safe zone the GPS will automatically alert you. This is especially helpful to anyone who has a pet that tends to wander off.

The online mapping system will have a green dot indicating that your dog is in the safe area, and a red dot letting you know that they have wandered past that area. You can even monitor them while you are away from the house.

Getting it ready

It is quick and easy to get any pet GPS system ready. You can do it on your own or call on the help of a professional who can come to your home and guide you through the process.

Once you have the main perimeter set up then you will need to set the system. You can go online with most of them so you can set all of your alert preferences and perimeter preferences.

You will never have to stress out about your pet again which will leave you to focus on other things.

Benefits

The reasons for getting a pet GPS system vary for each pet owner. However, the benefits remain constant.

Letting your pet out in the dark of night or during a heavy snow will no longer be an issue. You can feel free to just open the door and let them out. You won’t have to bundle up or get dressed.

Another benefit is that your pet is safer than when they are allowed to freely roam about. This saves many pets from going out into the highway or wandering away and getting lost.

There is not going to be a time where you have to go looking for your pet. You can simply pull the GPS system up on your pc or cell phone.

Your pet is undoubtedly a part of your family and you want to keep them safe. The pet GPS offers a care free way of ensuring the well being of that little family member. There’s no better way to show your love for them.

Labrador Training Techniques Using Sound to Stop Bad Behaviour

by Ian Brown

You can set things up in a controlled way so you can use sound for training purposes. This lets you get the exact result you want.

The 4 steps we are going to describe should be carried out in different places. We are going to try to get inside our dog’s mind to understand him better in order to start our work.

They think, have a sense of humor, communicate, tease, lie, steal, etc. just like any one else. But, they don’t think human. Dogs are limited to thinking like dogs. It’s your responsibility to think things out from their perspective and try to use good judgement.

By being consistent with your dog, and using reflex conditioning, it is possible to change any of his behaviour patterns. If you are not consistent your dog will get confused.

Using a set of cans, or any other source of sound, so long as it is brief, and so long as it can be presented from different directions on each consecutive instance, are all that you need to do to break any behavior. Simply create the sound, and follow through with praise! It’s that simple. Any behavior can be stopped or broken, simply by creating a sound, and praising immediately. The secret is, to allow the undesired behavior to begin again, and simply present the sound from another direction, and follow through with praise. Of course you have to understand how your dog thinks and learns in order to successfully achieve this.

Every time we create a sound this way, we praise him until he stops the behavior. You have to be ready to start the sound again when the behavior starts. You have to get past the point where you say to yourself “why should i praise him ?” but it works. As we said before you have to stop thinking like a human.

The value of this training method is that you can use it now and forever, for anything that you want him to do. It is so effective, that should he not perform as you expect, then he is most likely rebelling against your authority.

You will soon come to enjoy this process because it really works well and you can take satisfaction from knowing how to change behavior. Do bear in mind that this is changing existing behavior, not teaching new behavior.

The Battle With Dog Fleas Can Be Won

by Jane A Moore

How to get rid of fleas for once and for all is a common conundrum. Even with the most diligent efforts it is often a task that takes repeated tries. Fleas multiply at an unbelievable rate and therefore everyday counts. When you first suspect your dog or cat has fleas do not delay in taking action against the fleas. Everyday additional day that your pet has fleas makes the task of getting rid of fleas just that much harder.

Getting rid of fleas is possible, although you need to be prepared for a fair amount of work. It’s not enough just to give your dog a bath and think that the fleas will be gone. You have to clean and exterminate just about every place that your dog frequents, and maybe even keep your dog from going to the dog park at peak flea season in order to stop the spread of fleas.

There are a number of different ways to treat fleas on your dog. You can use commercially available flea products such as Frontline. This is often the most effective method of flea eradication. These products can easily be found in your local pet store. Some people don’t like to use these products and would prefer a natural way of getting rid of fleas. You can try to get rid of fleas naturally using such things as talcum powder, garlic, and olive oil. Each of these methods id effective in getting rid of fleas.

To get rid of the fleas that have already escaped into your house may be a bit harder. Finding all the spots where your dog has been, and fleas may now be hiding or have laid their eggs will be tricky. Start by washing anything and everything that your dog may have come into contact with, and any clothes or portable items (IE stuffed toys) that are in areas that your dog frequents. Washing clothes, toys, linens and rugs in hot water, and then drying in the dryer or hanging them out to dry in the sun will get rid of any flea eggs that are on these items.

After washing all of the bedding, you will need to vacuum every where the dog or cat has slept. Be very careful to vacuum everywhere. Remember to remove the vacuum bag after vacuuming and seal it to prevent the fleas from hopping back out. If possible, steam clean your carpets and sofas. While steam cleaning your belongings use the hottest water possible.

Getting rid of fleas can be an arduous and monumental task. You need to be diligent and methodical. Fleas pose a serious health issue to your pet and also to your family. Devote an entire weekend to the task. If you seriously attack the issue whole-heartedly then you will have the most success.

Puppy labrador training using sound

by Ian Brown

The fastest, easiest, most effective approach is to recreate the undesired situation in a controlled setting, and correctly use sound distractions with praise to erase the misbehavior. Dogs can learn or unlearn almost anything in four properly conducted repetitions.

We are going to carry out a 4 step process. Part of this will be to use different locations each time and to use some pros to help. Along the way, we will be trying to get inside our dogs mind to understand his thinking better.

We will be using a set of cans in our demonstration. These allow us to change the direction of the sound quite simple by moving the string. This is all we need to change a behavior. We are going to create sound and follow it immediately with praise. What you do is let the unwanted behavior begin nad create a sound from a different direction, and then praise him.

Every time we create a sound this way, we praise him until he stops the behavior. You have to be ready to start the sound again when the behavior starts. You have to get past the point where you say to yourself “why should i praise him ?” but it works. As we said before you have to stop thinking like a human.

Now that you have the technique you can continue for ever to use it to condition him. In future if he makes a mistake in any of the training you have conditioned, it is probably more of a challenge to you as the boss.

Perhaps this is why so many trainers seemingly enjoy correcting their dogs forever. I guess the real reason it is so difficult for us to share the Wits’ End Dog Training Method with other pet professionals, is because we take all the satisfaction out of “dealing with” and obstreperous dog. The problem is, that corrections do not teach new behavior.

Tricks to Keep Dogs from Digging

by Andyl Hannerl

A lot of things can be done by a dog that may cause their owners anxiety to blow. Some of these things are barking excessively, running away, urinating in the house, or chewing up anything that they see. These problems can be avoided if training is given when the dog is still a puppy.

Proper training requires that the owner be consistent in the rewarding of good behavior and having consequences for poor behavior. Dogs love to have the attention of the owner, so ignoring the dog when it is behaving poorly and giving the dog attention when it is behaving properly is often all that is needed to change the dog’s behavior. Another problem that dogs will sometimes participate in is digging.

Solutions for the reasons

A lot of reasons are behind digging, so as an owner, you will need to analyze these reasons first before you can train them to keep off digging. It is normal for dogs to enjoy digging, and for some dogs, the reason why they dig is merely because they are bored and need more activities in their lives. Some dogs dig to escape to find a mate. Some dogs just love digging in dirt that has been just fertilized.

Some dogs just dig because it is a part of their nature and for some, they just like to find a place that is cool enough for them to lie on. And some dogs just like hiding their food in the dirt and they dig holes to do so.

Let them learn tricks and experience a lot of new things. Usually, a bored dog becomes destructive and one way to avoid this is by walking them or giving them activities that will keep them on the go as these will be a new experience for them.

Do away with giving your dogs bones as this is something that will encourage it to dig and bury. Give him treats that will be readily consumable instead.

Another thing that can hinder your dog from digging is by keeping balloons in the area where they usually dig. This way, when it starts to dig again, the balloon will pop, scaring your dog and that would make digging a negative experience for him; therefore, he would not want to dig again.

Make sure that you do not leave you dog unsupervised in the yard, this is so when you see him digging, you can spray him by a hose or a squirt gun to keep him from digging again.

The All-Purpose Hunting Dog, The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP)

by Chuck Berry

Thanks to the efforts of German breeders to develop a faster and more reliable pointer, we have the marvelous German Shorthaired Pointer or GSP as a hunting companion today. The GSP was incorporated from other pointer breeds such as the old Spanish Pointer, Hounds of St. Hubert, Foxhound, the English Pointer and some other unidentified hounds. The result of this development is a much faster and more excellent hunting dog.

The GSP can practically perform all the roles of an excellent gundog. It can perform tasks of a pointer, a retriever, upland bird dog and water dog. As a good hunting companion, the GSP should manifest keen intelligence, boldness, obedience and quickness and a lack of these characteristic implicates improper training from the owner.

As additional proof of the GSP’s excellence in the hunting scene, Stanley Cohen’s The Intelligence of Dog ranked the GSP as 17th on the list. The GSP has a strong sense of hunting that is why it is a must for the owner to train this dog in identifying the right prey from the small animals that should be left alone. It is not so surprising to find a GSP that is not well-trained to come home with a dead rat, bird or cat as a trophy of its personal hunting escapades.

A lot of people around the world today still opt to use the GSP for a hunting companion because of the breed’s unfading skills in gunning and hunting. During these activities, you can expect the GSP to be reliable, hardy, quick-witted, fearless and completely tireless. A well-trained GSP should never indicate dispositions of timidity, fear, over subservience, wariness, un-trainability and most importantly, aggression.

However, not only is the GSP excellent in hunting but in being a family companion as well. This dog is very family-oriented, protective, friendly and very loving. It loves to be with children and likes the attention of humans and other canine friends.

This excellent gundog looks swift and powerful with its lean and streamlined body. It has powerful hindquarters that allow it to move and turn quickly. Its ears are slightly long and floppy while its snout is long, broad and powerful and allows it to carry heavy game.

It is a must for the GSP to be docked (unless it is banned in the country) and thus its tail is only long enough to give a wag or a subtle wave. The coat is double layered and is short and flat. The inner coat is dense while the outer coat is stiff which serves as a repellant against water.

The common colors of this breed are dark brown, chocolate or chestnut (liver), black and white. Some GSPs may come in these colors solidly but generally, GSPs come in these colors but with speckles or patches of other colors such as white or liver all over their bodies. Interestingly, this color formation of the GSP allows it to camouflage against trees and bushes during winter season.

What You Need To Know About Online Dog Training

by Andyl Hannerl

A lot of people are now using online dog training for their pets since it can save them a lot of money and is more accessible for them. A lot of breeds can be trained using online dog training since there are lots of specific techniques found online that will work well with specific types of dogs.

Even though there are dogs that we specifically train for security purposes because they an are defensive and aggressive in nature ” a lot of them have very nice personality and are genuinely friendly. Diverse breeds of dogs have different food, exercise and health requirements than other animals and they also differ in personality and behavior too, and it is with online dog training that take all of this into report

Training Methods

Before dog training, you should be sure that the training method is right for your pet and your home. Every year, thousands of dogs are taken to local dog pounds because the owner underestimated their ability to train the animal.

Although online dog training is less expensive to learn than other methods, they are also harder to master and can sometimes cause harm when training systems are not used correctly. You also have to consider the fact that some dogs mature later than other dogs and same goes for some breeds who learn training faster than other breeds.

Healthcare

When using online dog training, it is very important for the animals to be examined by a veterinarian before beginning training to discover any health problems and after the training has been begun to ensure that the training is not harming the dog.

Health problems can be passed down from generation to generation, especially if the dog is a purebred breed, so to prevent disorders from appearing in your pet and causing significant health problems, veterinarian visits must be frequent and the dog must get regular exercise in addition to the online dog training to maintain their weight and keep them healthy.

Needs in Training

Online dog training, especially obedience training, will be required at an early age for the dogs to make them pleasant to have in a domestic setting. Proper training will ensure that the dog will not hurt themselves or damage anything in the home through ignorance. Some dogs like to jump up on their owners and get underfoot when the owner is not looking, which could cause their owners significant injury if they were to trip over the dog.

Training the animal early also teaches the dog good manners and allows them to be indoor animals and be around the rest of the family. Proper training can also curb the destructive tendencies of a discontent dog. Although online dog training may require the use of several different methods to teach the dog a particular lesson, they turn the new addition into a pet that is lovable to all other members of the family.

Ways To Stop Dog Aggression

by Andyl Hannerl

There are a lot of reasons for a dog to be aggressive towards other dogs. It can either be that the dog is fearful or nervous around another dog, it can also be that the dog is trying to be the more dominant dog, or it can be that the dog is trying to defend its territory.

There are also some cases that a dog can be taught by the owner to be aggressive rather than be socially interactive with other dogs. Other dogs are simply being protective of their masters who make them aggressive in a way and this goes for being sexually aggressive as well.

Tips

One way to stop dog aggression is to make sure that a dog is socialized as a puppy to other animals. Puppies should be allowed to play with other dogs that are mature and well behaved.

This way, they will be able to learn proper dog behavior from adult animals. The puppy also learns that being with other dogs is okay and that he need not fight with another dog just so he can defend his territory or be protective of his owner from other animals.

One way of stopping dog aggression is by immediately addressing the behavior every time it happens. Do not allow the dog to think that he can get away with this type of dangerous behavior. You can opt for a muzzle or a head collar while the dog is going through training to stop dog aggression but will not solve the problem in the long run.

A way to stop dog aggression is through strict training so that the dog is tuned into the instructions of the owner rather than focusing on the other animal. The dog should be trained to focus on the owner so that his attention is there and the owner can give another command to the dog, such as ‘down’ or ’sit’ while there is another dog around.

The owner should also teach himself to control his anxious feelings and behavior, as small as it might be, so that the dog does not take a nervous cue from the owner. This can help to stop dog aggression since the dog always takes its cue from the owner.

Once your dog knows how to focus, train him to look for a treat even when theres another dog around. This can be done by throwing a treat on the ground and then telling the dog to find it at the same time distracting it from the other dog and stopping the aggression before it even begins.

When Will My Puppy Be Fully Grown?

by Jim Navary

“When is a puppy fully grown?”

That question is probably not foremost in your thoughts when you bring a new puppy into your life. That adorable little face, those huge soulful eyes, and that cute wiggle when he walks are what come to mind when thinking about your new pup. But gradually, as your puppy gets older and perhaps a bit destructive, you may find yourself wishing that he would grow out of some of those youthful traits and begin acting more like an adult dog. By the time he’s chewed your third pair of shoes you will probably begin to wonder…

“When will my puppy be fully grown?”

Although there are some similarities between early development stages of puppies and human babies, the process is considerably quicker for canines.

Your newborn puppy will develop rapidly during his first three weeks . He opens his eyes, takes his first steps, and begins to act like a tiny dog. During this early stage he will not really be aware of the world beyond his “mom” and his brothers and sisters.

Somewhere between the third and fourth week, your puppy’s senses of sight, smell, and hearing rapidly develop. All of a sudden he’ll discover that there is more to his world than just his canine family. His relationship with his new human family begins to take shape. This is a critical time for the development of your puppy’s personality and behavioral traits. Take care to avoid stressful or traumatic experiences as they may significantly influence how your dog will behave as an adult.

Your puppy will begin learning proper pack “etiquette” during the fifth through seventh weeks. If he begins to bite too hard or play too rough, his canine “mom” will correct him. These early lessons allow him to develop some of the social skills he will put to use as he interacts with humans and other dogs.

During the first three months of his life your puppy will experience many new things. Whenever possible, try to make these learning experiences positive. In doing so you are much less likely to encounter behavioral problems as he approaches adulthood.

Your puppy enters the “toddler” stage of development at around three months. He wants to act more independently more independence and explores the world as he sees fit, not at the prompting of his mother or his human family. Shoes, furniture, books, and just about anything within reach will fascinate him. He will also learn what they taste like as he begins teething. This is a good time to begin very basic obedience training and establish your role as pack leader.

Your puppy enters adolescence at around six to eight months, well on his way toward becoming an adult. The change from adolescent to adult varies, depending on the breed (or mix of breeds), you can be pretty sure that he has reached adulthood by the time he reaches his second birthday.

That’s when your puppy is fully grown.
