5 Tricks to Stop your Dog Chewing

by Craig Clemins

Doe’s your puppy or dog chew? Chances are it does. In this article you will learn 5 tips I use to stop puppies chewing. You’ll never have to worry about your favourite pair of running shoes again!

The first thing you need to do is to get your dog checked out by a vet. Sometimes puppies and dogs chew due to underlying medical reason’s, we need to make sure that everything is ok with our dogs before proceeding with this training.

Chewing is one of the most important phases dogs go through, it shouldn’t be banned totally, all you should be trying to achieve is to teach your dog what can and what can’t be chewed. You also need to teach your dog about items that are dangerous to chew - such as power-cords etc.

The best way to teach your puppy what it isn’t allowed to chew it to use the “No” command. Give a firm “No” anytime you catch your dog chewing something it shouldn’t be, then take that item away from the dog if possible. If your puppy persists, give it a squirt of water to the face.

As you approach the dog to remove the item it’s chewing, do it in a slow controlled manner. If you move too quickly your dog may get the wrong idea and thing you are playing. If the object is fixed, or large, try spraying some bitter apple chew deterrent to stop the chewing.

You shouldn’t be attempting to stop chewing entirely as it is healthy, try to redirect your dogs chewing to items that can be chewed on such as chew toys for example.

Watch out for aggressive unexpected reaction when you try to remove your dogs favourite chew toy. Some dogs will resist the removal of one of “their” possessions.

The tips above will work and your dog will stop chewing, all they need is a little practice and patience. Give your dog some time and she will end up mastering them.
