Are all GPS Pet Locators The Same?

by Adam Webster

Pets become very special to families. They often feel like another member of the family. We become attached that we want to do everything possible to protect these little guys. It is disheartening to walk back to a kennel and find that your best friend is missing. That is when the GPS pet locator comes in handy.

Perhaps your beloved pet ran through your legs as you opened the door to let a guest in and now you cannot find her. Once again, it would have been so nice to have had a GPS unit attached to her collar before she ran away.

A GPS pet locator uses the same technology of a GPS unit in your car. It can give the location or your pet to within fifty feet.

While some of the units come attached to their own collar, others will fit onto your pets own collar. This allows them to be used on any sized dog. Earlier units worked best on medium sized dogs. The newer ones have solved this problem. As long as the dog has it’s collar, you can find its location almost anywhere.

There are two different GPS locator services available. One allows you to outline a boundary online of where your pet is allowed to be. If the pet crosses that boundary, you will receive an alert call on your cell phone. The service will send maps to your phone or computer as to the location of your pet.

The second unit type does not use the set boundary, but allows you to send the system an alert if your pet is missing. The service sends a signal to start the GPS unit and then the location is relayed to you.

You may find a few limitations to these units. There are some terrains where the units do not work well. Additionally, you must make sure that the collar fits your dog so that it does not slip off.

For most areas and medium to large pets, a GPS pet locator is a great device.

Some pet locators even have a button that a good Samaritan can push to let the company know that a pet has been found away from its home. This additional security measure is a great option for your pet.

Why not take a one hundred dollar preventative step rather than have to offer hundreds of dollars in rewards in hopes of getting your pet back. The GPS locator is a great investment that involves only a small monthly service charge.

In addition to a pet getting out of his or her kennel or the door, today, we have the worry of pet thieves. There are people that will steal you dog to sell to someone else. If your pet has a GPS pet locator around his or her neck, the likelihood of recovery is much greater.

Why not give the best protection available to make sure that you can find a lost pet. That dog will come home with its tail wagging.
