Dog Food Recall
Buying dog food these days can be very hard to do. Besides the hundreds of brands to choose from, you need to select a variety that is perfectly suited for the size, age, breed, and activity of your dog. Not only that, but you also have to think about the pros and cons between dry and wet dog food, canned or frozen, and lots more. Because each dog responds differently to various dog food products, you can’t always be sure that what your neighbor feeds his dog will be enjoyed by your canine.
The problem with choosing dog food brands is not only because of the numerous selections you need to make. Did you know that there are also possible contaminants that may be found in the dog food products that your will be feeding to your pet? Since dog food is manufactured, it is unavoidable that certain preservatives, chemicals, and contaminants may find their way into the product. Sometimes, the possibility of contamination is detected too late, and the dog food items have already been shipped to stores, sold to customers, and consumed by dogs. To remedy this problem, health authorities and manufacturers need to issue a dog food recall.
CBS News reported in May 2007 about a dog food recall and cat food recall to over 100 types of products from grocery stores. It has been determined by the United States Food and Drug Administration that melamine, a resin used for manufacturing synthetics, has tainted some of the dog food and cat food. Some of the brands included in the dog food recall were Lams, Alpo, Natural Balance, Del Monte, and Eukanuba, and several others. The announcement by the FDA was released in June 2007. Some of the retailers that have returned these contaminated products were Safeway, Kroger, and Walmart.
Before this dog food recall was issued, several cats and dogs have been reported to show signs of kidney failure. As much as 10 deaths related to feeding on these melamine-tainted pet foods have been accounted. You can check the FDA website for more detailed information on the brands and varieties included in the dog food recall.
