Safe Dog Food

Buying dog food at the grocery store can be as tough a decision as choosing a brand of cereal for your kids. Because there are lots of great-sounding brands, and attractive-looking packages, it makes you really think hard about what kind to get for your dog. Not only that, since dog food companies are highly competitive, their prices also vary, along with the multitude of flavors, types, nutrients, and others that are contained in these dog food brands.

Another issue that arises is that safe dog food may or may not always be available from pet store or grocery shelves. The alternative that pet owners turn to is to cook their own dog food out of recipes they have created themselves. Some of the dog owners who prefer this practice over purchasing commercial dog food claim that they are even more assured that they are giving their pet safe dog food.

As we know, some of the agricultural products that we consume everyday already contain chemicals that are used in the process of growing them. As an example, vegetables, fruits, and other crops like grain may contain herbicides or pesticides.

Livestock and poultry may have growth enhancers or hormones in them. Just to be sure, a lot of experts and pet lovers recommend buying only organic vegetables and meat products, as they are grown without the use of chemicals and additives.

Safe dog food also means that you should not be feeding your dog foods that are inappropriate for them, especially when your dog is always around the kitchen, or when you are preparing meals from scratch. National Geographic, in their October 2007 issue, explained some canine taboos about food. Onions and garlic should never be fed to dogs, as these animals lack some of the enzymes that are supposed to digest the compounds present in them.

If humans can’t say no to chocolates, dogs should. Studies have shown that chocolate toxicity can occur in dogs, and can induce diarrhea, vomiting, and even a coma in severe cases. These are only some of the human foods that are unsafe for dog consumption. Learn more about them, so you can be sure that you will be providing your pet only safe dog food.
