Tricks to Keep Dogs from Digging
A lot of things can be done by a dog that may cause their owners anxiety to blow. Some of these things are barking excessively, running away, urinating in the house, or chewing up anything that they see. These problems can be avoided if training is given when the dog is still a puppy.
Proper training requires that the owner be consistent in the rewarding of good behavior and having consequences for poor behavior. Dogs love to have the attention of the owner, so ignoring the dog when it is behaving poorly and giving the dog attention when it is behaving properly is often all that is needed to change the dog’s behavior. Another problem that dogs will sometimes participate in is digging.
Solutions for the reasons
A lot of reasons are behind digging, so as an owner, you will need to analyze these reasons first before you can train them to keep off digging. It is normal for dogs to enjoy digging, and for some dogs, the reason why they dig is merely because they are bored and need more activities in their lives. Some dogs dig to escape to find a mate. Some dogs just love digging in dirt that has been just fertilized.
Some dogs just dig because it is a part of their nature and for some, they just like to find a place that is cool enough for them to lie on. And some dogs just like hiding their food in the dirt and they dig holes to do so.
Let them learn tricks and experience a lot of new things. Usually, a bored dog becomes destructive and one way to avoid this is by walking them or giving them activities that will keep them on the go as these will be a new experience for them.
Do away with giving your dogs bones as this is something that will encourage it to dig and bury. Give him treats that will be readily consumable instead.
Another thing that can hinder your dog from digging is by keeping balloons in the area where they usually dig. This way, when it starts to dig again, the balloon will pop, scaring your dog and that would make digging a negative experience for him; therefore, he would not want to dig again.
Make sure that you do not leave you dog unsupervised in the yard, this is so when you see him digging, you can spray him by a hose or a squirt gun to keep him from digging again.
