Shih Tzu dogs seldom bark and are not as outgoing as most breeds and was originally bread to look like a lion. The Shih Tzu is independent, loyal and cheerful. It loves to sit on your lap and get plenty of affection.

The Shih Tzus history is long and distinguished which gives way to its stately attitude. The Shih Tzu is one of the oldest breeds of dog which is proven by recent DNA testing. Its name comes from Xi Shi, who was regarded as one the most gorgeous women in ancient China.

These extraordinary dogs were bread as Buddhist Monk temple dogs. These monks bred special “palace dogs” for a variety of emperors. It was their tradition to send some of these Tibetan Lion Dogs to the Tzu Hsi - the Empress of the Manchu Dynasty. She loved these petite dogs and they became common in the region of the palace from then on.

In the 19th Century the Shih Tzu was breed for emperors as a watch dog for the Manchu Dynasty. However, they would mostly sit on laps and get pampered all day which is characteristic of the breed. At first they where strictly forbidden to be cross breed, but after the Empress passed they breed with other toy dogs.

The Shih Tzu’s were not kept apart from the other palace dogs and today’s Shih Tzu’s have traces of Pekingese and Pugs thanks to the careless breeding practices at the palace.

Shih Tzus are happy with daily walks or play time in the yard. Shih Tzu cannot regulate their body temperature easily, which makes them highly prone to heat exposure; they should never be left outside during hot days or over exercised.

The Shih Tzu is well suited to apartment life. Today’s Shih Tzu’s are a well-liked breed which is largely loved and make a great faithful companions.
