Why Do Dogs Dig Holes
A pet owner would be annoyed by the dog’s habit of digging holes. Digging, barking and chewing are natural behaviors of dogs thus although these behaviors can be modified they cannot be totally eliminated. All dogs dig. Because dogs do not know that the inclination to dig is an unacceptable behavior, an owner would come home one day to a lawn with crisscrossing tunnels and a dog with a very proud look on the face.
The silly dog would think that digging holes would please the master. We love our pets but surely we do not love their destructive behaviors. This problem can be prevented by keeping the dog on a leash but as it is customary for dog owners to want the dog around this would not be a very good option. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to know the reasons for the dog’s inclination to dig? This option can be more effective method of amending the dog’s destructive behavior.
Boredom, as always would be on top of the list why dogs dig. Most of the undesirable behaviors of dogs were developed because of boredom. Dogs are not only energetic, they are also social animals. Digging holes is only one of the destructive behaviors dogs will develop if not given the opportunity to expend excess energies or the chance to interact with the human family.
Destructive digging can be the dog’s attempt to call the attention of the human family. The irate master would scold the dog but in a dog’s thinking, reprimand would be better than being ignored. Dogs would dig holes to gain freedom. Dogs do not enjoy being leashed because these energetic animals love to roam. Dogs are curious animals thus the sounds and scents on the other side of the fence will be very interesting. To get to the other side, the dog will dig tunnels.
For a dog, digging is a cool activity. Digging holes would be a pleasant activity for dogs especially if the temperature is hot. Lying on a newly dug hole will cool the dog’s heated body. In the wild, these animals would dig holes to hide the prey. The dog would dig holes to be used for storage purposes not unlike the way we store food in refrigerators. Dogs are really intelligent animals as they would dig holes to bury bones and other food in preparation for lean days.
